Can the new iphone be used in the classroom as an easy way of tracking student progress (formative evaluation) tool? I would envision it as a means of moving about the classroom and recording observations on student performance as they work in groups, or individually. Thus eliminating the need for a bulky binder with paper tracking/observation sheets etc.
Can this information be EASILY downloaded or transferred to my laptop?

Hi there and just wanted to say its great to see a blog dedicated to just this topic. If you don't mind I'll share it as I have organised a discussion list within my Education Department (in Queensland, Australia) for iPhone using educators, and write on the topic at www.mLearnxyz.net. You mention it being very useful as basically a portable media centre, it will be very interesting over the coming days and months to see what other uses develop... Looking forward to more articles.
